Nederlands: Foto. Celebes had een net van redelijk onderhouden paden en wegen dat overwegend door voetgangers gebruikt werd. Daarnaast werden er echter ook dieren gebruikt voor het transport van personen en goederen. Hierbij speelden vooral paarden een grote rol. Men onderscheidde als een apart paardenras het Makassaarse paard. Dat had zijn bestaan te danken aan de vorsten van Zuidwest-Celebes (Bone, Goa), die paarden nodig hadden voor de hertenjacht. Paarden werden bereden (ondermeer als 'dienstpaard'), fungeerden als trekdier voor wagens en karren en werden tevens als lastdier (draagpaard) gebruikt.
En toen kwam de auto. De foto laat de klassieke combinatie zien van een auto en een benzinepomp. De pomp is van de BPM (Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij), een werkmaatschappij van de combinatie Koninklijke Olie/Shell die in Indië veel oliebronnen exploiteerde. De auto's werden geimporteerd, maar er was een redelijke kans dat het rubber van de banden uit Indië afkomstig was. De auto is nauw verbonden met de opkomst van het modern toerisme in de Archipel, want met de komst van dit voertuig moest men de wegen wel verbeteren. English: Celebes has a net of many pathways and trails, which are predominantly used by pedestrians. Additionally also animals are used for the transport of persons and goods. Especially horses did play a major part in this. One distinguishes a special breed of horse, the Makassaar-horse. It ows its existence in the first place to Zuidwest-Celebes (Bone, Goa), where the horses were needed for deer-hunting. Horses (including "service-horses") are used to pull carriages and are used as pack animals.
And then came the car. The photo shows the classic combination of a car and a fuel-pump. The pump is of the BPM (Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij), a subsidiary of Royal Oil/Shell, which exploits (runs) many Oilwells in India (Dutch East-India). The cars are imported, but it is very likely that the rubber for the tires came from India (Dutch East-India). The car is closely connected to the upcoming modern tourism in the archipelago, because with the introduction of the car, most of the roads had been improved.
