English: Drying copra after shelling the coconuts
Nederlands: Foto. Kokosolie werd gebruikt als lampolie, bij het koken en als haarolie. Als lampolie werd het aan het einde van de 19e eeuw door de aardolie verdrongen. De kokosolie werd door velen voor eigen gebruik gemaakt, maar er werd ook al vroeg handel in gedreven, zelfs tussen de verschillende eilanden. Het maken van kokosolie was een eenvoudig proces. Tot ver in de 19e eeuw werd deze olie dan ook grotendeels in huisnijverheid geproduceerd. Pas in 1910 ontstond er een moderne, grootschalige kokosolie-industrie die gebruik maakte van hydraulische persen. Het product van deze moderne nijverheid werd afgezet in het buitenland. Er ontstond zo een grote vraag naar het vruchtvlees van de kokosnoot, de kopra. (P. Boomgaard, 2001)
