| Description |
Nederlands: Negatief. Onder de Regent diende in ieder Regentschap een groot aantal lagere inheemse functionarissen. Deze hele groep, met inbegrip van de Regent, werd aangeduid met de term 'inlandse hoofden', ook wel kortweg 'hoofden', zoals in Max Havelaars 'toespraak tot de hoofden van Lebak'. Het ging hier om forse aantallen. Elke Residentie bestond uit meerdere Regentschappen, die op hun beurt weer onderverdeeld waren in districten en onderdistricten. Rond 1900 waren er zo'n 400 districten en dus ook districtshoofden (wedana) op Java. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
