English: Senior Experimental Scientist, John Adeney, preparing samples collected from an experimental column being used to remove trace metals from acidic wastewater, Floreat Laboratory, WA In collaboration with the West Australian Government, CSIRO, through its Water for a Healthy Country flagship, has undertaken a review of existing and potential water resources for the region and detailed future demand for both drinking and non-potable water. The research found that the diversity of water sources provides the region with a resilience that will help it adapt to climate change. The study also found that the groundwater reserves in the Perth Basin represent a substantial water resource which could help meet future needs. A key element of the research is investigating the potential for increasing water reuse and recycling. In collaboration with other groups, we have trialled a system known as Managed Aquifer Recharge, in which treated wastewater is returned to the aquifer where it is cleaned by natural processes. This water can then be reused for irrigation and horticulture, potentially returning up to 100 gigalitres of water to Perth's water supply.
