Summary[edit]

Description
English: Camarasaurus sp. - sauropod dinosaur foot bones from the Jurassic of Utah, USA. (public display, Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, Utah, USA)

The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation is widely distributed in many western American states. The unit consists of fluvial (river/floodplain) and lacustrine (lake) deposits. Dinosaur bones and dinosaur tracks are moderately common in Morrison Formation sediments. Exceptionally dinosaur-rich localities include Como Bluff in Wyoming, Dinosaur National Monument in Utah, Dinosaur Ridge in Colorado, and the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry in Utah.

Seen here are foot bones from a Camarasaurus, which is a type of sauropod dinosaur. Sauropods were the largest terrestrial animals ever. They all have the same basic body plan: large body with four walking legs, very long neck & tail, and a small head relative to body size. Sauropods were herbivores, and are often perceived as holding their heads & necks up high to reach vegetation normally out of reach to other organisms. Modern reconstructions of many sauropod species depict them with heads and necks held close to the horizontal, or at low angles above the horizontal.

From exhibit signage:

Camarasaurus

Translation: "chambered lizard" Height: 25 feet Length: 60 feet Weight: 30 tons Distinguishing characteristics: A large square skull and blunt, spoon-shaped teeth are characteristic of this dinosaur. It likely ate more coarse plant material thatn other long-necked dinosaurs such as Barosaurus.

These are casts of some of the largest bones yet found at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry.
