| Description |
English: Notable among the materials on display are the famous figured capitals that were brought to light in the frigidarium of the Baths. Two of them, with figures of deities on the four sides, formed a pair that decorated the passage from the frigidarium to the natatio, on the central axis and in the focal point of the whole building. The two capitals rested on refined columns of red porphyry, the most expensive "marble" of the Romans, quarried in the eastern Egyptian desert on Gebel Dokhan.
The second pair of deities depicted on the capitals consist of Mars (on the capital with Bacchus) and a female figure (on that of Hercules). The god war is depicted as young, naked, with a sword over his shoulder and a helmt on his head; with his right hand he holds a lance resting on his shoulder. |
