Summary[edit]
DescriptionCardross Old Parish Church - geograph.org.uk - 1059043.jpg |
English: Cardross Old Parish Church. For another view, see 14672.
This disused church, by James Dempster, was built from 1826-7, and was bombed in 1941. It is the second church on this site; its predecessor was built here in 1643-4. At an even earlier period, when the boundaries of Cardross Parish were quite different, the parish church (St Serf's) was located in what is now Levengrove Park: 977441 ["North Clyde Estuary - An Illustrated Architectural Guide", Frank Arneil Walker with Fiona Sinclair]. After Dempster's church fell into disuse after sustaining damage during the blitz, a former Free Church became the new parish church: 1095632. A small stone panel is visible on the walled-up doorway; it bears an inscription: "To the glory of God the tower of this Church was restored as a witness to past faith and future hope / Summer 1999 / 'Look Forward in Faith'". On each side of the doorway, at about the same level as the panel with the inscription, darker details are visible; these are two carved stone heads: see 1059062 and 1059063. |
