Description
Victoria Carolina Coronado nació en Almendralejo (Badajoz) el 12 de diciembre de 1820. Retrato de busto corto en uno de los más bellos testimonios de la retratística psicológica del pintor, al incidir sobre el rostro de la escritora del que afloran sentimientos que reflejan la profundidad de un alma herida por el reciente fallecimiento de su hijo primogénito. De perfil y vuelto el rostro hacia el espectador, destaca con entonada iluminación su ensoñadora y a la vez decidida mirada que aúna a un rictus de melancolía en la contenida sonrisa que evocan sus labios. Enlutada, cubre parcialmente su cabeza con una mantilla de encaje que deja ver las ondas de su cabello adornado con una trenza natural, subrayando con un punto de luz la transparencia del encaje blanco y la intensidad del terciopelo negro que ribetea su camisa interior. A la escasa paleta cromática desarrollada, entroncada en la más pura tradición nacional barroca, aúna también el pintor el recurso de la mano que sujeta el abanico asomando por encima de la natural enmarcación, en contraste con la suave degradación tonal que cierra de forma difusa el fondo del retrato en sugerentes formas que evocan paisajes de corte romántico (Texto extractado de Gutiérrez, A. en: El retrato español en el Prado.
