"Casa Paleni si affaccia su quella che un tempo si chiamava Strada Ferdinandea (poi Viale Roma, oggi viale Papa Giovanni XIII), l’arteria realizzata nel 1838 in occasione della visita a Bergamo dell’imperatore austriaco, inaugurando il nuovo sviluppo urbanistico della città: il novello visitatore non appena sbarcato a Bergamo dopo la costruzione della “via ferrata” (1857), si trovava così di fronte il maestoso viale alberato che, con una lunga visuale, correva dritto verso porta Sant’Agostino passando per Porta Nuova. La casa fu commissionata da Enrichetta Zenoni Paleni a Virginio Muzio (1902-1904). Il prolifico architetto bergamasco declina qui il suo eclettismo in una più esplicita adesione alle forme floreali, che si manifestano soprattutto nelle trifore curvilinee, che decorano tutto il primo piano, e negli ornati che donano un movimento vivace alla superficie della facciata. Queste decorazioni sono tutte in cemento – materiale innovativo tanto amato in questo periodo di sperimentazioni – realizzate dalla stessa ditta Paleni che si occupò anche della decorazione della chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie. Il risultato è un intreccio di gusti differenti che, accanto ai dettagli floreali di balconi, finestre e sottogronda, accosta le testine femminili delle lesene d’angolo, tipicamente secessioniste, alle scene con puttini nella fascia centrale che hanno invece reminiscenze cinquecentesche."
