La NASA ha lanzado una misión llamada Dawn (en inglés, amanecer) para visitar Ceres y el asteroide (4) Vesta. Fue lanzada el 27 de septiembre de 2007. Entró en la órbita de Vesta en julio de 2011, y lo observó durante poco más de un año. En septiembre de 2012 Dawn abandonó Vesta y tras un viaje de tres años, en 2015, llegará a Ceres.
