Description
English: Chamberlain Memorial and Central Library, Chamberlain Square B3.
  • The Chamberlain Memorial http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamberlain_Memorial,_Birmingham was erected in 1880 to commemorate the mayoralty of Joseph Chamberlain, the Liberal councillor and MP. The Central Library, in Brutalist style, was opened in 1974. The architect was John Madin John_Madin, whose company was active in Birmingham for over 30 years. Unloved by the city council, the library is under threat of replacement by a banal glittery box.
Chamberlain Square is a superb public space. No one photograph can convey its many qualities. As a viewpoint it reveals the contrasts between some very different buildings. As well as the two radically contrasting structures in this photo, there is also the neo-classical Town Hall 1562586 and the Museum and Art Gallery 556591.
