Summary[edit]

Description
English: Chapel Bank Formerly known as Ebony (Ebon's Ey or Ebon's Island) and once, as the name suggests, an island in the Rother tidal estuary that ran around the northern side of Oxney. It was important enough to have a church and priory on it during medieval times but by the 19th century the church had fallen into disrepair and the population deserted it for nearby Reading Street. Consequently, in 1858 it was decided to move the remains of the church to where the population was.
