______ Seggendo in piuma
Inferno 25th Canto

These are the lines, dear Miss Appleton, which I endeavored to remember in the crowed corner of a supper room, where [smudged – ices,] oysters & salads were more at home than Dante. If they [p. 2] strike you with half the effect they did me, when I first read them, I shall not regret troubling you with this note. They have been placed, as an inscription, on the front of a building devoted to education in Italy -- I think in Parma.
Believe me faithfully Yours,
Charles Sumner
