After three rangatira signed the Manukau-Kāwhia sheet on 20 March, Captain William Symonds left Manukau Harbour on 3 April. Symonds and co. hauled their boats across the 2km Waiuku (or Te Pai o Kaiwaka) portage, a narrow stretch of land between the Waiuku River and the Awaroa Stream. After reaching the Waikato River, he travelled downstream to the Waikato Heads Mission Station, where he met the missionary Robert Maunsell. This is a harbour chart of the Waikato Heads, dated 1853. It shows the site of the Mission Station and other landmarks from that time. The chart forms part of a bound collection of similar charts, created by survey vessels dispatched by the British Admiralty. Zoom or download to enlarge.
