Summary[edit]

Description
English: Chevaux de frise at Carn Alw The semi-circle of stones that would have been embedded in the ground at a angle in order to impede attackers can be clearly seen here protecting the southeast approach to the fort.

The term, first used for similar mediaeval defences, means 'Frisian horses'. The Frisians, having little cavalry of their own, relied heavily on such anti-cavalry obstacles and term has come to be applied to any such device that obstructs intruders eg. glass sticking out of a wall or spiked metalwork.

Carn Ddafad Las can be seen on the skyline.
