Summary[edit]

Description

This memorial was erected in 1864 to honor Chicago's volunteer firefighters. It was re-dedicated in 1979.

The memorial was designed by Leonard Volk, who is also buried at Rosehill Cemetery.

Volk (1828 - 1895) was a famous Chicago-based sculptor, noted for for making one of only two life masks of President Abraham Lincoln.

Volk also made several large monumental sculptures, including Rosehill's 'Our Heroes' Civil War monument, and the firefighters memorial where the vigilant fireman shown above stands atop a tall column, around the base of which is wrapped a fire hose. The base's granite marker contains the names of Chicago firefighters killed in the line of duty.
