On April 11 1929, Spence Atkinson of Auckland was killed after his car stalled on the Church Street crossing in Onehunga and was hit by a passing train. The coronial inquest into the accident states the cause of death was a fractured skull. The inquest includes statements from the train driver and other witnesses to the accident. The drawing illustrates the possible hindrances in visibility the train driver may have had in seeing the car due to the change in gradient in the road. The steep gradient of the road on approaching the railway crossing may have led to Atkinson’s car stalling at the crossing.
