| Description |
English: Churston station, 1984. View SW, towards Kingswear: ex-GWR Newton Abbot - Torquay - Paignton - Kingswear line, junction of a branch to Brixham. The formerly important Holiday line to Kingswear (for Dartmouth) had been allowed to run down by BR after about 1960, trains through to Kingswear from London and elsewhere no longer running beyond Paignton, but a local shuttle service continued until 30/12/72. (The Brixham branch, which had come in behind the photographer, was closed from 4/5/63). A few staff and one platform were maintained at Churston station and from 1/1/73 the Paignton - Kingswear service was provided by the (heritage) Dart Valley Light Railway Co., who had purchased the line, but at first in summer only. The DVLR, later the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, have gradually restored Churston station and the line to Kingswear. |
