Description

Bronze en:Sestertius issued by the en:Roman Emperor Claudius circa 48 AD. The obverse shows a very accurate representation of the emperor in profile with his titles. The reverse is a type that originated with the birth of Claudius' son en:Britannicus. The goddess Hope is represented, and the caption "Spes Augusta" translates to the "Hope of the Emperor." This commemorates the birth of the heir as a hopeful event for the royal family. This motif would be used by many emperors after Claudius.
