Close up of roller edge of RHP 6/MRJA30 Superblend bearing showing additional 'crowning'

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Close up of roller edge of RHP 6/MRJA30 Superblend bearing showing additional 'crowning'. The crowning is clearly visible as a matt grey area between the flat largest part of the roller and the small chamfer at the edge. It is this additional crowning that is described by the superblend term and contributed to the shorthand description of these bearings as being barrel-shaped. As the rollers are not curved over their entire width this term can be misleading. This was a 'special' bearing and the additional crowning would have made this more expensive to produce than a standard bearing. The bearing did however solve the problem of early bearing failure in Norton Commando 750cc Combat engines. This bearing was designated 'Superblend' in the Norton Service Release N2/9 of August 1972 and had the Norton Part No.063906. By late 1972 R&M had become merged into RHP. The bearing was superseded by Service Release N2/10 of January 1973 which specified a 'Extra high capacity main bearing' under Part No. 064118 which was a standard F.A.G. NJ306E roller bearing.
