Summary[edit]

Description

Mars Express HRSC image of a fog-shrouded Surius Vallis on an early autumn morning. Surius Vallis is a deep canyon carved through the Claritas Montes. These mountains mark the ancient rim of the 1800 km wide Argyre Basin, and some cliffs reach nearly 4 km above the Argyre Basin floor.

The great depth of the Argyre Basin (in places 4 km below Martian "sea level", where water can exist as a liquid, gas, or solid) allows frequent ground fogs to form, particularly during mornings in the warmer half of the year.

This image uses IR, Green, and blue images overlaid on a higher-resolution panchromatic image and adjusted to approximate what the human eye would see. It was taken by the Mars Express spacecraft on its 337th orbit of Mars, April 25, 2004.
