  • Lt-Col. Humphrey Minchin (c.1727-96), of Holywell, Soberton (which he purchased in 1765 and extended), was a MP for Okehampton and Bossiney. He was 1st s. of Paul Minchin of Ballinakill, King’s Co. by Henrietta Bunbury, da. of Joseph Bunbury of Johnstown, co. Carlow. (Source: History of Parliament biog[1]) He lived at Holywell, Soberton, Hampshire, England.(http://www.thepeerage.com/p20251.htm#i202509). Humphrey Minchin who came from an Angle-Irish family, bought the several Manors of Soberton containing approximately 2,000 acres about 1770. There were a number of reasons why Soberton may have been chosen by Humphrey. Foremost it is thought he knew the family of the previous owner, there were already a number of Anglo-Irish families in the Meon Valley and his son was in the Navy. Soberton also offered good sporting opportunities and his son, Paul, was a good all round sportsman. Initially the Minchins occupied the old Soberton Manor House but by 1780 they had built a new house in Droxford parish but on property that belonged with the manor of Soberton and not far from the Holy Well. Paul's brother, Henry, was the last of the family to live at "Holywell" and it is his funeral hatchment on the wall of the Curll Chapel in St. Peter's Church.
