History is on reverse: "Army Medical Museum, Washington. Photograph No. 361-Surgical Section.-Gunshot Wound of Thorax. Colonel Benjamin F. Kelly, 1st West Virginia Volunteers, aged fifty-two years, was wounded in the right breast at the battle of Philippi, June 3, 1861, a ball entering about two and a half inches below the clavicle and two inches to the right of the nipple, passing through the axillary region and lodging under the scapula, whence it was extracted about four months afterwards. After sufficiently recovering from the injury, and having been promoted to teh rank of Brigadier General in the meantime, he again reported for duty and served in various places within the Middle Military Division until June 1, 1865, when he was mustered out. Subsequently he was reported by examining surgeons as suffering at times from pain in the track of the ball, also from spasomadic actions of the muscles of the right arm and side on exercise, and from pleuritic pains after exposure. General Kelly paid a visit to the Army Medical Museum and was photographed on April 4, 1877, soon after which time he moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas, having been appointed Government Superintendent of said place. Photographed at the Army Medical Museum. By order of the Surgeon General: George A. Otis, Assistant Surgeon, U.S.A., Curator, A.M.M."
