Description Ocypode cordimanus
English: While observing the cannibalistic Common Ghost Crab at Danang Beach (Vietnam), unexpectedly two crabs emerged from the very same burrow.

Whether it is the Common Ghost Crab indeed is yet unclear. The burrows of these crabs were quite close to the intertidal zone, which is somewhat atypical. A logical alternative would be Ocypode ceratophthalmus. However, for this species antennae on top of the eyes are characteristic. None of the numerous crabs I observed that day carried these antennae.

These crabs are very fast runners and -hunters of smaller crab species e.g. Uca sp. It is difficult to get close. Best chance to shoot them is to watch an occupied burrow and wait. Eventually they come out. They are said to hunt mostly at night, however some are also quite active during the daytime.
