Summary[edit]

Description
English: Community Bank, N.A., 109 South Main Street, Naples, New York, June 2021. A would-be contributing property to the Central Naples Historic District that's proposed for the National Register of Historic Places, this 1914 building is an example of the so-called "Stripped Classical" style that's heavily influenced by the soon-to-be-in-vogue Colonial Revival: the foliate, urn, and wreath motifs of the relief panels on the entablature and parapet are par for the course in commercial architecture of the time, but the arrangement of windows around the front entrance - suggestive of the sidelight-and-toplight framing typical of the latter style, and with characteristic Roman lattice patterns in the transom windows - portends what's to come. The building was built for what was originally called Maxfield's Bank, founded by Hiram Maxfield (1822-1900) - a prominent businessman and Democratic politico who had earlier served terms as Naples' town supervisor and in the New York State Assembly and Senate - and run after his death by his son Denison, at which time the business took on its founder's given name and became known as the Hiram Maxfield Bank. The organization retained the Maxfield name over the course of several mergers before being absorbed in 1952 by the Security Trust Company of Rochester. It's now a branch location of the Syracuse-based Community Bank, N.A.
