Summary[edit]

Description
English: A conceptualisation of the differences between scientific and Māori (and other Indigenous) perspectives* on data derived from taonga (treasured) species. From a scientific perspective, a skin/tissue sample is taken from a Hector's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori), DNA is extracted, before being converted to digital sequence data for downstream analyses. However, from a Māori perspective*, each of these derived data form remains taonga (treasured), as it maintains its whakapapa (genealogical links) to the taonga species it was derived from.
  • It is important to note there are many Māori/Indigenous perspectives, and this represents just one of those.
