English: The U.S. federal government's Point Lookout Prisoner of War Camp Confederate Memorial at Point Lookout State Park on Point Lookout, Maryland.
In 1862 during the American Civil War, much of the land around Point Lookout was transformed into a temporary port city. There were numerous buildings, an army hospital, an army barracks, and a prisoner of war camp. It also housed a massive prisoner-of-war camp in which more than 50,000 Confederate soldiers were held in tents. Designed to hold only 10,000 prisoners, it was largest Union-run prison camp. Nearly 4,000 of them died, mostly due to malarie and smallpox. This was a death rate of 8 percent (the death rate on the battlefield was 16 percent). Extensive erosion of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline in the last 150 years has destroyed about half of the original site of the prisoner-of-war camp. This memorial and a nearby cemetery exist on the former grounds of the prisoner-of-war camp. |
