Summary[edit]
DescriptionConglomerate at Corsewall Point in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland - geograph 5546542.jpg |
English: Conglomerate at Corsewall Point in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. This outcrop is part of the Corsewall Point Conglomerate Member of Late Ordovician age (about 450 million years old). The clasts (boulders) that make up the bulk of the rock are mostly granitic, suggesting that their origin was in an ancient continent, from which they tumbled into the depths to form new rock at the bottom of the ocean before being exhumed again during the collision of Avalonia (including England) with Laurentia (including Scotland) about 450 million years ago. |
