Italiano: L'apparecchio è composto da un pallone A posto in un bagnomaria M. Un tubo uscente B viene costantemente raffreddato in un bagno d'acqua R ed entra poi in una allunga G ove si trova il tabacco C; l'altro tubo d è curvato e saldato al fondo dell'allunga, dove un batuffolo di cotone sostiene il tabacco. Nel pallone A si pongono circa 100 mL di etere ammoniacale, che evaporano e condensano nel tubo B gocciolando continuamente su C, estraendo la nicotina. Dopo circa 6 h il sistema viene raffreddato, l'ammoniaca rimossa per evaporazione spontanea all'aria e la nicotina base titolata con acido solforico.
English: The apparatus is made of a round-bottom flask A heated on a water bath M. Pipe B is constantly cooled in a water bath R, then enters a tube G where some tobacco C is placed over a cotton wad. The flask is filled with ammoniacal diethyl ether, which is boiled and condensed in B, drips over the tobacco, and then flows back to A through tube d. After 6 hours, the ammonia is removed by spontaneous evaporation and the nicotine titrated with sulphuric acid.
