English: Copper
Locality: White Pine Mine, White Pine, Ontonagon County, Michigan, USA (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 32.5 x 30.9 x 1.8 cm.
This is a large, striking specimen of native copper from Michigan. It is penny-bright, with thin sheets of black shale here and there on its surface, and covering most of the back. It came out of the earth just like this, having formed as a thin seam running through layered shale matrix. The White Pine was one of the country’s largest copper mines. It dates back to 1880 but was reinvented as a company town in 1954, rejuvenated during the Korean War, and not finally shut down until 1995. It is worked part-time for specimens, still.
