| Description |
English: Corgarff Castle The original tower was built in 1537 as a hunting lodge for the Earl of Mar. Situated in a strategic location it has figured greatly in history. In his spectacular campaign in 1645 Montrose spent time here before the Battle of Alford.In 1715 the Jacobite army gathered here before moving on to Braemar where the standard was raised, whilst in the 1745 rising the Jacobites used it as a magazine. Following Culloden the government garrisoned it to police the area & built the star shaped curtain wall with gun loops. Now it is in the care of Historic Scotland. |
