“[Sumner]”
Dear Charlie
Yesterday, at 1.oclock, a young Hyperion – Hyperionides, as Homer would say, made his appearance in this world. He not only made his appearance, but announced his arrival with a strength of lungs that could leave no reasonable doubt of his ability to make a noise in the world. He declared himself in viva voce tones that sounded [p. 2] very much like the I do so emphatically produced by Hyperion himself on his wedding night.
I was at Craigie House yesterday towards evening, and though I did not see the young gentleman, I heard the echoes of his eloquence sounding through both Halls and Chambers. Longo said he had been amusing himself in this way ever since he was born. Fanny had a good time, and everything seems to be going on well. In the course of the afternoon Longo asked Margaret “how the little fellow was getting on”. “Little fellow” [p. 3] said M “he’s as big as you, Sir!”
Will you not come out this afternoon 1 and stay over night? We somewhat expected you yesterday. pray come today, and welcome the advent of Hyperionides, who has shown himself a true son of light by choosing the day time for his first appearance.
Ever affectionately
Yours C. C. Felton
