In the United States, advertisements published in collective works (magazines and newspapers) are not covered by the copyright notice for the entire collective work. This is because the same advertisement will often run in many publications. Public art works published in the U.S. without an explicit, valid copyright notice, before 1978, therefore automatically fell into the public domain.

Thus, magazine and newspaper advertisements published in the United States before 1978, without a separate, explicit copyright notice may be uploaded to Commons as Public Domain. This full page advert was indeed published, as announced at the bottom in the photographed material, in the Albany, NY, 'Country Gentleman' publication, in 1951, as evidenced by this Amazon offer for a preserved 1951 Country Gentleman page, with this very advert printed on it.
