Summary[edit]

Description
English: A Mexican squash, probably Cucurbita moschata Mexican landrace "Xmejen kuum" mature fruit (called "Plato kuum" when mature).

Also "calabacita kuum" (Spanish-Mayan) or "Xplato" (Mayan-Spanish, "flat plate") when harvested immature.

As in the case of maize, the term ‘Xmejen’ (Mayan) refers to a short maturation period (around three months). ’kuum (Mayan) refers to the squash that has the specific type of seed that is locally known as ’pepita menuda' (Spanish) meaning ‘thin seed’. The squash known as ‘Xmejen kuum’ is the ‘little sister’ of Cucurbita moschata ‘Xnuk kuum’ as it has the same kind of seed but in smaller quantities. This squash was also identified by another name: Xplato (Mayan-Spanish.- flat plate), referring to the shape it takes in its mature stage.

The only squash used and the more appropriate for making a sweet called "calabaza melada".
