Deutsch: Das Wappen wurde am 12. Mai 1877 vom preußischen König Wilhelm I. verliehen. Es entstand zwei Jahre nach der Verleihung der Stadtrechte durch das preußische Innenministerium. Als "redendes Wappen" zeigt es die Kirche (für "-kirchen"), Schlägel und Eisen als Symbol des Bergbaus sowie die Wappenschilde der damaligen Landesherren (Königreich Preußen) und der früheren Stadtherren die Grafen von der Mark. In der Version als Großes Stadtwappen (siehe das früher im Rathausgiebel angebrachte Mosaik unten) besaß das Wappen zwei Schildträgerfiguren, und zwar heraldisch rechts einen Hauer (Bergmann) und links einen Gießer (Stahlarbeiter), welche die damals wichtigsten Industriezweige der Revierstadt verkörpern. |
