Object history
Deutsch: Appenweier gehörte bis 1805 zur Reichslandvogtei Ortenau und war Sitz eines acht Orte umfassenden Gerichts. Die Pfarrkirche Appenweiers ist dem Heiligen Michael geweiht. So zeigten die Siegel des Gerichts Appenweier auch den Erzengel Michael. Das seit 1481 bezeugte älteste Siegel stellt ihn als Ritter mit Schild und Waage dar, seit dem 17. Jahrhundert erscheint er als Drachentöter, und in dieser Gestalt übernahm der Ort nach der Auflösung des Gerichtsverbandes 1807 das Motiv für das Gemeindesiegel. Im Jahre 1903 wurde das Siegelbild vom Generallandesarchiv zwar farbig gefasst, aber nicht als Wappen gezeichnet. Für das Wappen in seiner heutigen Form entschied sich der Gemeinderat im Jahre 1959, am 12. März 1962 wurde es mit der Flagge vom Innenministerium verliehen. Am 1. Dezember 1971 wurde Nesselried, am 1. Januar 1975 Urloffen eingemeindet. Beide Orte gehörten einst zum Gericht Appenweier.
