Deutsch: Wappen der ehemaligen Bauerschaft Katernberg, seit 1929 Stadtteil von Essen: „In Gold (Gelb) ein schwarzer Berg belegt mit einem silbernen (weißen) Haus mit schwarzem Fachwerk und silbernen (weißen) Tor; darauf ein herschauender schwarzer Kater.“ Das Wappen wurde von Kurt Schweder entworfen und hatte nie offiziellen Charakter. Ende der 1980er Jahre schuf der Heraldiker für alle Essener Stadtteile Wappen. Es handelt sich hier um ein klassisches "redendes Wappen"; der Kater auf dem Berg. Die alten Schreibweise "Kat(h)erenberge" weist auf diese Bedeutung hin; es gibt aber auch andere Meinungen, nach denen es "eine Kate am Berg" bedeuten soll. Das Wappen wird hier beiden Theorien gerecht.English: „Or, a hill sable charged with a house and gate Argent with timbered framework; thereupon a male-cat guardant sable.“
The arms were drawn by Kurt Schweder who designed coats of arms for all districts of Essen in die 1980s; they were never official used. The arms are canting; "Katernberg" or "Kat(h)erenberge" means a male-cat upon a hill. But there are other opinions, who believe that its means "Kate" (cottage) by the hill. The arms fulfil both theories. |
