Deutsch: Den Ort Mönchsdeggingen verbindet eine über 800jährige Geschichte mit der Benediktinerabtei Deggingen, die als ältestes Rieser Kloster gilt. Im Ortsnamen kommt dies deutlich zum Ausdruck. Das Kloster ist eine königliche Stiftung und wurde in der zweiten Hälfte des 10. Jahrhunderts gegründet. Zwischen 1007 und 1016 schenkte Heinrich II. das Kloster dem Hochstift Bamberg. Dem hl. Martin war die ehemalige Klosterkirche 1192 geweiht, darauf weist die Gans als Attribut des Kirchenpatrons. Im Jahr 1347 verkaufte Konrad von Hürnheim die Burg Hochhaus sowie die Schirmvogtei des Klosters an die Grafen von Oettingen, in deren Besitz die Herrschaft bis zur Säkularisation 1803 blieb. Der silberne Schragen aus dem Stammwappen der Oettinger erinnert an deren Herrschaft im Ort. Die Mönchsdegginger Pfarrei war ursprünglich nicht mit dem Kloster verbunden. Das Dorf hatte zusammen mit den Orten Ziswingen und Merzingen eine eigene Pfarrkirche, die dem hl. Georg geweiht ist. Dies wird durch das Georgskreuz im Gemeindewappen dargestellt. |
