En Europe, l’Aigrette garzette se répartit essentiellement autour des mers Méditerranée, Noire et Caspienne, si bien qu’elle apparaît en nombres très fluctuants en Suisse. Elle s’y fait toutefois plus fréquente depuis 1990, notamment en saison de reproduction et en automne, comme désormais en hiver. La première tentative de nidification a eu lieu en 2014 dans une héronnière à Zoug : un individu a apporté du matériel de construction le 27 avril, puis un couple a occupé un nid peu visible du 10 mai au 7 juin (D. & J. Kronauer, A. Huber, C. Monigatti, B. Walser). En France, la Garzette a nettement progressé ces 50 dernières années, étendant sa distribution vers le nord et l’intérieur du pays (p. ex. le long de la Loire); après une première nidification en 2005 en Alsace, 4-9 couples nichent chaque année à quelques kilomètres au nord de Bâle. L’augmentation est aussi forte en Italie du Nord, tandis que la Garzette niche depuis 1998 en Autriche. À une première reproduction en 1978 aux Pays-Bas a fait suite une hausse marquée dans les années 1990, que des hivers froids ont récemment mise à mal. De nouvelles tentatives de nidification sont donc à prévoir en Suisse à court ou moyen terme.
