Summary[edit]

Description
English: Paddington - Perranporth/Penzance express struggling up Dainton Bank.
View NW, towards Newton Abbot, Exeter, Taunton and Bristol/London: ex-GWR South Devon main line. (See other scenes at this celebrated site and SX7760 : Manchester - Penzance express ascending Rattery Bank near Tigley for comments on 'Summer Saturdays in the West'.) On this infamous day, the 08.25 Paddington - Penzance/Perranporth was absolutely crammed with many people standing in the corridors. They may have been standing for seven hours already, for it was 15.30 and the train was 150 minutes late, being due at Penzance at 16.40 - and there were 110 miles with 11 stops still to go. No wonder holiday-makers went by car after that. The locomotives are the prototype Collett 'Hall' 4-6-0 No. 4900 'Saint Martin' (cf. SX7360 : 'Summer Saturdays in the West': Newquay - Newcastle express descending Rattery Bank), piloting 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 5055 'Earl of Eldon' (built 6/36 as 'Lydford Castle', renamed 8/37, withdrawn 9/64).
