Description

This terrific photograph shows one of the Top Hats worn by officers more than 100 years ago.

Birmingham Police was formed in 1839 and consisted of 260 men.

Their original uniform was designed to emphasise both the authority and approachability of Birmingham’s first police officers.

Top Hats were eventually replaced by police helmets to protect officers while on duty.
