Matthäus Merians Stich von 1646 ähnelt stark dem Holzschnitt von Trier von 1548 in Sebastian Münsters Cosmographiae Universalis (Titel: Situs & figura antiquissimae & praecipuae Medioniatricum ciuitatis Treuirensis), die als die erste authentische Stadtansicht von Trier gilt. Zwar ist Merians Ansicht detaillierter als der Holzschnitt, bildet aber bauliche Veränderungen, die zwischen 1548 und 1646 vorgenommen wurden (z. B. an der Konstantinsbasilika) nicht ab. The engraving closely resembles a woodcut from 1548. While providing more details than the woodcut, the engraving does not show changes of the view between 1548 and 1646.
