Summary[edit]

Description
English: Death's Head Hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos) Caterpillar, Eden Undulating nonchalantly across one of the many paths at the Eden Project was this startlingly attractive Hawkmoth caterpillar. I wasn't sure precisely which of the hawkmoths it was at first, but have been pointed in the right direction by Penny Mayes.

This remarkable creature was about 4½ inches (11.5 cm) long and flicked itself into a horseshoe when tickled with a leaf by a little boy. Thankfully the little critter was allowed to go on its way when the boy was asked to desist.

The Death's Head Hawkmoth imago (flying phase) has the largest wingspan (up to 130mm) of any British moth. Having kept Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillars as a child however, I think that those larvae are possibly slightly longer than the larva of the Death's Head seen here.
