Summary[edit]
DescriptionDeep hole in the wood - geograph.org.uk - 230600.jpg |
English: Deep hole in the wood. Drakes Lane 230510 runs beside a narrow strip of woodland for a few hundred metres. I was surprised to find several deep holes in the wood with no sign of exposed chalk, indicating that the topsoil hereabouts is much deeper than one might expect on the top of the Downs. How or why the holes were formed I cannot guess - they are far too deep to be the result of a fallen tree. There are Dene holes marked on the map about 1km north of here but they were dug (current theories say) for the extraction of chalk. Maybe these holes are associated with the nearby Hollingbourne Zero Station.
