Ce tableau non signé correspond au numéro 179 du catalogue de G. Séailles qui date de 1870. On y reconnait bien Edmond, le fils de l'artiste, qui est âgé de 10 ans en 1870 et qui se déguisait volontiers pour servir de modèle à son père. Le vêtement assez caractéristique se retrouve dans un autre tableau de l'artiste de 1870 "les deux amis" (n° 176 du catalogue); la vaisselle se retrouve également dans d'autres tableaux de Dehodencq ("le serviteur noir", "la fête juive à Tanger", "Le mariage juif", tous trois datant de 1870); les boucles d'oreilles argentées an larges cercles sont souvent représentées par l'artiste. Enfin la manière (le type d’expression, avec les pupilles un peu dilatées, la bouche légèrement pincée, l’expression un peu sévère et finalement peu commune) est typique de l'artiste, notamment dans les portraits de ses enfants.
