English: Prohibition of the market on Saint Nicholas Evening by the magistrate of Delft, as well as a condemnation of this holiday in general. Translation:
Milords, the magistrates of this city of Delft, have noticed that in recent years a certain evil practice has become more and more commonplace. Namely, that all sorts of stalls are erected on the market green on the strangest of occasions, being unrelated to the weekly and annually held fairs. And it is especially on the fifth of December, which is called Saint Nicholas Evening, that the market green is occupied with lots of these stalls, in which one sells a variety of goods that one (after buying) tells the little children that the same Nicholas has given to them. Which is a matter not only conflicting with all good order and government, but which is also distracting the public from the true faith: resulting in delusion, superstition and idolatry. This (therefore) should not be tolerated in a good governed city of the Christian reformed church. So is it that. (Summary of the prohibition in the margin: Not allowed to occupy the market (green) with goods on Saint Nicholas Evening.)
