Well, Delicate Arch was pretty cool. It's an easy 1.5 miles up sheets of slickrock and, near the top, a path carved out of the cliff edge. Then you reach this amazing natural sandstone amphitheater with Delicate Arch on the far side, framing the La Sal mountains. The view:effort ratio is acceptably high on this walk. Everyone says you should go up there for sunset - the rock glows orange and red in the fading light and it's really quite spectacular. Would recommend, but be aware that a few other people will have the same idea. The graduated gently sloping sides of the amphitheater make for good rows of seating, so it feels a bit like everyone settling in to watch a football match or something. Most people wander off pretty quickly after the sun sets, making it well worth hanging around for a bit to enjoy the silence and see the stars appear. The walk back down under the full moon was equally beautiful. |
