Deutsch: Der erste Dombau entstand im 9. Jahrhundert unter Bischof Altfrid. Alle Nachfolgebauten erheben sich auf dessen Fundamenten. Nach der Kriegszerstörung durch den großen Luftangriff am 22. März 1945 wurde die Barockisierung des Doms aufgegeben und eine Wiedererrichtung in angenommenen frühromanischen Formen durchgeführt. Weltberühmt sind die Bronzegüsse aus der Zeit des Bischofs Bernward (993–1022): Bernwardstür mit Darstellungen aus der Heilsgeschichte und Christussäule mit Darstellungen der Taten Christi. Weitere Schätze sind der Heziloleuchter (romanische Leuchterkrone in der Vierung, „himmlisches Jerusalem“) und der spätromanische Bronzetaufbrunnen. Den Lettner, der sich jetzt in der St.-Antonius-Kirche befindet, schuf der Bildhauer Johann Brabender aus Münster (Westfalen). Berühmt ist außerdem der „tausendjährige“ Hildesheimer Rosenstock an der Domapsis, der den Feuersturm des Zweiten Weltkriegs überstanden hat und das Wahrzeichen Hildesheims ist. Der Dom selbst war so stark zerstört, dass er nach Abschluss des Wiederaufbaus am 26. März 1960 durch den damaligen Hildesheimer Bischof Heinrich Maria Janssen neu konsekriert werden musste. Der Hildesheimer Dom ist seit 1985 Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO. |
