Summary[edit]

Description
English: Derwent Mouth Lock near Shardlow, Derbyshire. The lock is the first on the canal, allowing boat traffic into the River Trent. Building of the Trent and Mersey Canal started in 1766 and was completed eleven years later. This section through Shardlow was already in operation by 1770, and allowed wide boats as far as Stenson. The present beam width limit is ten feet, but the first six locks will accommodate a pair of seven foot wide narrowboats side by side.
