Português: Descoberta do Cabo da Boa Esperança. (Bartolomeu Dias, 1488) Situado abaixo da atual Cidade do Cabo e antes da chamada Baía Falsa, foi dobrado em 1488 pelo navegador Bartolomeu Dias (c. 1450-29 maio 1500), com as caravelas São Cristóvão e São Pantaleão, que o apelidou de Cabo das Tormentas, dadas as dificuldades que ofereceu a sua ultrapassagem, mas D. João II, ao receber a notícia, alterou o nome para Cabo da Boa Esperança, dado marcar a ligação do Oceano Atlântico com o Oceano Índico. O extremo de África, efetivamente, é o Cabo das Agulhas, no lado oriental da Baía Falsa e não foi propriamente uma descoberta, mas uma dobramento ou ultrapassagem. Este navegador integrou depois a viagem de Vasco da Gama (1469-1524) à Índia, de 1497, mas ficou em São Jorge da Mina e a segunda esquadra enviada, comandada por Pedro Álvares Cabral (1467/68-c. 1520), mas naufragou entre o Brasil e o Cabo da Boa Esperança. |
